CAR-T cell therapy is one of the most advanced cancer treatments in science. The patient's
defense cells are modified in the lab to learn how to eliminate the disease. Then, they are
replaced in the body, enhancing the body's natural fight against cancer.
This treatment only existed outside Brazil or on an experimental scale. From now on, two
production units will be installed in the state of São Paulo as an initiative of the São Paulo
government and in partnership between Butantan, USP and the Ribeirão Preto Blood Center.
Reduction of pain medication
Decreased need for chemotherapy sessions
Possibility of total or partial remission of cancer
National production, allowing the therapy to reach the Unified Health System (SUS)
Drawing the patient’s blood and isolating T cells (leukapheresis)
Production of CAR T-cells in the laboratory
Growth of CAR T-cells in the laboratory
Infusion of CAR T-cells in the patient
CAR T-cells bind to cancer cells and destroy them
The CAR-T cell therapy program is an initiative by Butantan, the School of Medicine of the
University of São Paulo (FMUSP), the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP-USP) and the
Ribeirão Preto Blood Center, supported by the State of São Paulo.
